Question of points
Not sure if I can put into words the question I want to ask but here it goes....The stage is West Germany in 1987. The Red Horde is sitting across the boarder. They outnumber NATO by something like 4 to 1 in tanks, 10 to 1 in artillery and so on and so on. I want to play a long campaign using the US against the Soviet Union. My starting points for a core force will be 15,000. How much should the computer AI be given to reflect the mass numbers of troops and equipment?
I would think that because the Soviet equipment is cheaper that both forces should get 15,000. A Soviet MBT is far cheaper than a M1A1. Or should the Soviets get something like 25,000 points versus the US 15,000? Any insight or thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello. I do not think my answer is the best but I give my opinion.
If you want a further 4 to 1 then you take 15000 points and give IA 60000. Try to see what happens.
I'm not sure that the AI buy according to what you say, 4 to 1 in tanks, 10 to 1 in artillery ...
You may be purchasing for the IA and the IA deployment does. You know from that units fight but would not know your disposal.

You do not give the AI any specific "number of points" in a campaign. It gets given the value of your core forces plus any supports, times the battle type modifier (e.g. 1.0 if it is a meeter).
The points value setting on the preferences page in a long campaign is only relevant for your initial core troops buy.
The air setting is always treated as XXX in campaigns, again ignoring preference pages.
If you want the AI to have an advantage (or disadvantage) then see the setting for the INI file AIAdjustPercent modifier (See game Guide -> Playing A Campaign, scroll down to the box describing it).

Re: Question of points
You don't say how long your campaign is, but it is worth noting that the value of your core force will increase as every unit gains experience. Core force also grows in points value if you use the rebuild points to upgrade units.
I play a lot of long campaigns and find that experience and rebuilding quickly increases the force value, it can easily double or triple. This means that the amount of points available to the AI goes up, so successive battles will get harder and the numerical superiority of the AI will grow.
At some point, depending on how long the campaign is, you will always face 500 enemy units, regardless of scenario. You could find yourself outnumbered in an assault when normally the points system would give an advantage.
cheers,
Tim

Re: Question of points
Thank you all for your answers. I have never tried my hand at scenario building but perhaps I will. The only dumb question is the question that is never asked. Thanks.
