Mmm, you'll get biased answers because most of the dome communities are half there to organize MP games, but for me at least a lot of the complexity comes from scripting armies and mages(there are some truly mean tricks you can play), ritual spells, and pitting your mind against another human foe. Once the opponent can also do research the game becomes an incredibly complex game of using limited scouting information to anticipate what your opponent is going to throw at you and trying to figure out counters to it(that they don't anticipate or can't counter, which makes it a lot harder).
