That's very noble, but perhaps one of the reasons you're having so much trouble is because you're operating a WP force with a NATO mindset? The Reds were more than willing to see an infantry battalion wiped out if it meant a position could be taken with minimalized losses to more expensive assets, and it's going to be very hard to get the full potential out of them without suffering heavy casualties.
