It takes one pearl, but mages can burn more gems to temporarily boost their magic level, and sometimes casting AI does that even when it's not needed. Your pretender burned enough gems that he didn't have enough to cast Solar Brillance (which needs 2).

I feel like I need to go back to college to learn how this game works sometimes. Thanks for the information.
