Nope - just their nickname in the usual intra-unit "friendly rivalry" back in the non-PC 1970s. It may well have come from the name for their drinking and football teams (same thing really).
Probably comes from a concatenation of
bampot (Local Scots vernacular, similar to the Irish
eejit) +
loon, and all rhyming with platoon.
