A question about LBM pictures
I wonder why are they all in gray-scale? I managed to make dozen colored photos and the game works just fine, + they look much better than B&W.

Re: A question about LBM pictures
They are B&W for consistency. A B&W image can always be found or converted but not so colour and not all colour photos can be reduced to 160x80 and display a decent image as the game IS set up to display a usable range of black-grey-white but it is not set up to display a usable range of colour. Yes, you can always find a few dozen photos that work in colour but not to cover the combined 11,000 + that is in both games now so all the unit photo released with the game will continue to be produced in B&W

Re: A question about LBM pictures
In addition to what Don says - Colour images are only used in link screens in the game, where the colour cycling is not running (for smoke and fire effects).
The black and white palette used does not use any of the reserved cycling colours - but colour conversions (or B/W ones that do not use the correct palette!) may. Therefore if displayed in the running game screens, the colour pictures will sometimes "swim" or "sparkle" with the smoke cycle as the game colour shifts some of these pixels as it thinks it's a smoke or water or fire effect.
Mainly that will likely be in the "information" pop-up box for enemy targets, though there may be other screens that show this. (Its been since way back in the MSDOS days since I last looked at that stuff.)

Re: A question about LBM pictures
So, the palette used for the LBM pics in WINSPMBT is "JASC_WINSP_PICPAL". does this palette use use any of the reserved cycling colors? Because i managed to make color pics with this palette, and they look quite good.
And if there is no conflict with the reserved cycling colours, i think there should be no big problem. I use those custom made color pics, and i haven't experienced any erratic behavior.
And if the palette uses reserved cycling colours, would it be possible to make a palette which does not use any of the reserved cycling colors (slightly different tones), and integrate it in the game, so that it can be used for color pictures?

Re: A question about LBM pictures
In the game the palette provided named JASC_WINSP_COLOUR_PICPAL is the one I use when making colour photos for the link screens . JASC_WINSP_PICPAL has had all of the colours that cycle for making fire and water removed so it will not under any circumstances, cause colour cycling

Re: A question about LBM pictures
I tried to test if i can make good color pictures with the LBM palette, and here are the results. I am actually very pleased. the tanks didnt turn well as planned, maybe get another pictures, but the other ones are very close to the originals.
The LBM's are in "clolor_pic.rar" file and the originals in the "originals.rar" file

Re: A question about LBM pictures
If you are happy that's the main thing but for the most part this is why I stick to B&W in the game.
