There is a conVersion factor of squares to light years. 10 LY : 1 map square, if I recall correctly. Actual distance is used on diagonals, not "grid distance," so use the Pythagorean formula if you need to get exact distance ( D = sqrt( dX^2 + dY^2 )).
Of course, a Large galaxy is no larger than a Small galaxy, it's just more densely packed with stars (BTW, in MOO3 there will be a galaxy size called "My God It's Full of Stars!" Serious! Unless they cut it... ) so in a Small galaxy the level 1 and 2 warp-point openers will be almost useless...

If you're in the centre of the map, level 4 will pretty much cover the whole map.
Ed, I agree that on a small map, level 1 is close to useless, but I think level 2 can be quite useful. For real effect and versatility, you need at least level 3.
