It surely sounds like you have installed the patch to a folder that was in a different path from where your game was installed - since the graphics errors will be coming from not being able to find the WinVFX8 dlls that reside in the main game folder.

Was your old game installed to the correct path as described in the Game Guide (C:\shrapnel games and not C:\program files\shrapnel games)?

I would reinstall from scratch, ensuring that any installers you have are pointed to the correct new (Windows 7 and above) path - older installers from XP and before will have /program files/ baked into the install path so remove that part of the path, if found!

Ensure each installer is using :

C:\Shrapnel Games\The Camo Workshop\WinSPMBT

NOT

C:\Program files\Shrapnel Games\The Camo Workshop\WinSPMBT
