This sounds like one of
One Thousand and One Nights stories linking together two cities
Kraków in Poland and
Samarakand in Uzbekistan. This Legend is from Middle-ages but final of this 700 years story was marked in 1942 when soldiers of Anders army released from captivity in Gulags as an army were transferred to then British occupied part of Iran. Their way were through then part of CCCP south east republics which were in Middle-ages part of big Mongols empire in that part of Steppe Khanate of Khiva...
