Re: drone launching bug?
you know, you could just make different stratiges for your anti planet drones, and force them not to target ships...
I like Geo's plan, that sounds like a good fix!

Re: drone launching bug?
Yes this is probably the biggest problem with drones. I reported it soon after the release of SE IV Gold to MM with a very similar suggestion as Geoschmo to fix it. Unfortunately I never got a response. I don't think this would make drones too powerful.
The only "fix" I see now immediately (and that's what I did), is to reduce the basic supply use of drones and include a solar collector in their design. At least then they are not destroyed if they don't move. But it is of course only a suboptimal solution.

Re: drone launching bug?
Here is a solution for your drone launching. Store them in a transport that has no launchers and switch them just before you reach the planet. If you have a fighter carrier and a drone carrier, just swap their cargo. This makes you vulnerable while on route, but it does prevent accidental launching.

Yes, but how do you do that for planets with drones in their cargo?

Park a transport or base in orbit and store them there. If you see an attack coming, transfer them or have the transport run away.

Park a transport or base in orbit and store them there. If you see an attack coming, transfer them or have the transport run away. This procedure has two important disadvantages:
1.) As you said "if you see an attack coming". If the attack comes as a surprise you are lost. And if you transfer your drones to the cargo of the planet your enemy still can trigger the complete and useless launch by a minor attack with a sigle small ship or a drone.
2.) The cargo ship or base will cost maintenance therefore reducing the most important advantage of units in general: their lack of maintenance.
