Search by Registered Number?

We can search for articles by a member by using the number of the member (Search by Registered Number).

Is there an easy way to determine a member's number?

The only options I know of are:
1) Peruse the threads where we "think" he may have participated (i.e. where he posted a message).
2) Wait for the member to appear on line in "Recent visitors".

Is there a better way?

One thing you can try is searching for the name as a keyword. If they have their handle in their sig, or anyone else has directed a comment to them that they've replied to, you should be able to find a post with their number.
