Everybody will have their own take on SE4 and I respect the reviewer's opinions - he played the game enough to hold them.
The reviewer's view appears to be that:
1. SE4 is very complex, with a lot of detail.
2. SE4 takes a long time to play to a result.
3. No fast moving 3D graphic spaceships exploding.
4. Tactical resolution of combat sucks.
For 1 to 3: you either like this sort of game (and I do) or you don't.
For 4: I have no comments on this review of Tactical resolution of combat. I have never used it in SE3 or SE4 and never plan to. I am the supreme galactic warlord emperor king leader of the Empire, not a fleet admiral.

Unless you are aware of what you are getting yourself into, this game will soundly wallop you with a frying pan of plenty. But somewhere along the line I wish they had managed to inject more fun. Continuing fans of the series will have decades of fun with this one, but people who aren't thrilled by the description of the gameplay above (and I think I've done a pretty good job of capturing the flavor if not the actual mechanics of the game), might want to look elsewhere for their 4x jollies".
So, I'm very curious what everyone here thinks about the critisisms that were expressed in the review. Valid or not?

SE4 is a game for hard core intellectual strategy gamers. It's not for everybody. I play chess, where as my blonde girlfriend prefers checkers.
That reviewer doesn't like SE4 because he is more of a checkers man than a chess man!

Give the guy credit, he played it at least. As to the fussing about complexity, that is pretty much an each to his own. Tactical combat is at least a somewhat legit gripe if only because given the bent of his comments, he is not a strategic turn based gamer at heart. The graphics comment is, IMHO the killer. For me state of the art graphics is in the nice but hardly important Category compared to gameplay. This guy just needs to wait for Myst III, it won't do much but it will sell well and look great. I've played all the 4x and SE IV has gotten more of my precious time than BOTF or MOO2 and I really enjoyed those. RFTS vanished from my hard drive within an hour of firing this puppy up.

He must not have played it too much though, tactical combat can be speeded up with the "Fast Combat" option in the options button. I use that when I have a zillion ships to move.

No, he really could not have played the game much. A ship take 3 years (30 turns) to build? What the heck is he building with what?
His research needs 100 to 150 turns to complete? Mmm, might build some more research...
I don't know, either he hasn't played it, he is just a "bad" 4x player (no harm intended) or he just hit the "end turn" button.

My planet creating and destroying ships take about 4 years to build with space yards III. Even longer if I include a space yard in them. I think he was saying that tech areas can take that long to research not one area. He said advanced technologies take that long to research. But he really should have been able to get Gas Giant tech by then if he really wanted to.
I really disagree with his assesment of the game however, the things he didn't seem to like are to me the strengths of the game I like the complexity and I even like the tactical combat (not that it couldn't be improved) much better than the combat of say a Reach for the Stars.

Yea, I would think he more the RTS-type gamer (what can be fun, too.  Look at Colse Combat 2).
