Too true. If only we had Speer to run our military industrial complex. but to the topic at hand, and without ranting on why i dislike scheduled gift giving events, here are some of the titles I plan on picking up:
available now:
Neverwinter Nights
Mafia
BCT and ATF from everyones favorite Online publisher
available after xmas:
MOO3 (early Jan they say)
X2 (sequel to X: beyond the fronter. X2 should be what Elite was then, for the ultra-modern gamer today)
Freelancer (microsnot's remake of Privateer. blatant more-of-the-same-ism in an under-done genre. looks like fun.)
I also think the new Battlecruiser games look neat (3000ad.com) but since (1) the first two fell down. (2) they have a dozen games that do the same thing, and the newer ones claim to have more features. (3) Dr. Smart is an ego centric jackass and he rubs me the wrong way. I am compelled to either (2) wait for a later release, or (1&3) just not buy it.
there is also a pretty spiff space tactical game (more ship-on-ship), i think it might have been IG3, or something like that. i dont know if its out, or much about it.

DavidG, I've been looking for game like this as well, and we may be in luck. Battlefront.com and Fury Software have recently put out Strategic Command: European Theater - a game of grand strategy like 3rd Reich. William R. Trotter from PC Gamer, whose opinion I trust, rated it 90%. He says its the best grand strategy game since Clash of Steel (which I've never played).
I've put it on my list for the holidays. I hope that it's as good as advertised. Sometimes one does need a break from conquering the galaxy.

Well looks like Christmas came early for me. I happened to be in a game store and found exactly the kind of game I've been looking for. A grand strategy type WW2 game. It's call Hearts of Iron. Now let's hope it is actually good.

DavidG,
I just started playing this (well, actually just learning it) over the weekend... I wonder what you think of it so far? I've played Europa Universalis and it's based on the same engine (which is quite nice).

Re: Xmas Game Wish List
I know this has been mentioned before, but I know what I want for Xmas next year (besides seeing Frodo of the nine fingers and the Ring of Doom):
Space Empires Five
I dont know what its going to look like or play like. But I know I want it. Rumors are welcome, feel free to contribute any that you've got.
