Re: Why Star Trek??
Actually I really liked Star Trek, TOS and STNG were my Favorites..dont care much for Voyager, and only the Last couple years of DS9 were much good. As for the shipsets, it was easy to mod due to the availability of pictures, most of us either dont have the skills or the time (or both) to create a set from scratch. The games I play I use a variety of sets, Star Trek, Star Wars, the Modpack sets, couple others like the Taera (make great Klackons)...there are so many great sets out there. Go to Universal shipyard and you won't find any trek stuff..but I believe Last count was around 40 sets, some of which are pretty fantastic. But I still use some Trek stuff because I like it, as do many others. So if you want other sets besides Trek..they are out there, and plenty of them.

Re: Why Star Trek??
Would intellectual property issues prevent Malfador from adding any of these shipsets to official patches? I'd think modders doing them would fall under "fair use", but I'm not even sure about that.

Re: Why Star Trek??
Deathstalker,
Why Star Trek?
Why not Star Trek?
Nobody is suggesting that you must use the star trek shipsets or mods that are available. The "infinite diversity" of Trek lends itself very well to a SEIV format. It is something that is familier to many, and yet large enough to not become stale unless you concentrate on only one segment of it.
I have no artistic or programming talent whatsoever, but I put together a TrekMod that replaced all 26 races in the original game with various races from the Star Trek universe. I simply borrowed what was out there and put it all together in one package.
Probably there isn't another sci-fi franchiise with enough variety to do something on that scale, but you don't have to do that. There is nothing wrong with "mixed-universe" games. I think they add a lot of flavor.
All of you suggestions for alternates sound facsinating to me. Why don't you post some of them?
Oh, and Deathstalker, one more thing...

Re: Why Star Trek??
What about Buck Rogers (well, the 80's Version, at least...)?

Mesons are the mediators of the strong nuclear force. The picture is that protons and neutrons are attracted because they toss mesons back and forth. Without the attraction of the strong nuclear force, the only thing left would be the repulsive electromagnetic forces between the protons (since "like charges repel"), and the nucleus would explode.
So presumably a meson bLaster would destabilize target nuclei. Imagine a group of jugglers who dislike each other, but they like juggling balls with each other enough to overcome their dislike. Then imagine the effect of throwing balls at them.

Re: Why Star Trek??
Thanks for the kind comments on the Space 1999 and SB shipsets (amazing how many ship pics can be found on the net). It's nice to know it was appreciated. I do indeed remember Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, BSG and all those funky old shows. Time to take another look Online and see how many ship pics can be found.

How about a "Josie and the Pussycats" mod? I can't believe they made a movie based on that!

Re: Why Star Trek??
I think the movie makers have gone insane. They seem to be running out of ideas.

Re: Why Star Trek??
Holy, make a post at 3am when my brain is mush and wake up to 18+ Posts. Guess I hit the motherload. I am currently working on two shipsets in my spare time. (which is none, I tend to play too much!). One is a 'Lego' based set (yes, LEGO.) and the other is a 'psychic vampire' type race using the CuCappa AI as a template, need to find some skulls to use as ships though (currently using the Drushokka(sp?) shipset, just inverted the colors so they look like energy blobs). Will post once I like the look of both enough.
Oh, and for the age thing, yes I will hit the big three zero this summer, NOT looking forward to it. Last thing I remember was being 19 and going to University and playing Civ I and the first Wing Commander.
As always, thanks for putting up with my humble ramblings.
