Yes I love Illwinter and the Dominion game but this thought did have sneaky undertones.....
I was thinking "Master of Magic" which is an old standby (I still play it on my WinXP machine). Alot of what I would like to see in Dominions comes from that. But hey, he could just download that from the-underdogs.org
Maybe "Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic" which in many ways is a decent replacement for MoM. Its a PBEM but has many of the features that are being mentioned on the wish lists here.
There is an old board game called "Magic Realm" which I considered a great effort to try and achieve random in a board game. It still shows up on EBay every once in awhile
