Re: TCP/IP Games...
Ok, I tried putting empire in the beginning steps but that did nothing. So here's my system specs. 866 pentium 3. Windows XP Home edition. No routers as far as I know. (My dad does most of the network stuff) DSL internet connection. (356K) The firewall type I don't know. I read somewhere that XP has a built in firwall. Do I have to disable that one? If so any of ya'll know how to do that? To open the ports, does it just have to be ONLY ports 6716 and 6720? Or every port in between? (i.e. 6716, 6717, 6718, 6719, 6720). And they have to forward 'Both' protocols (udp and tcp)? Is that correct?

Re: TCP/IP Games...
I have no XP with XP but you should do something about the build-in firewall. Either open the ports or just shut it down for the time you play SE4 Online. Don't ask me where the firewall is and how you can do it, as I said, no XP with XP.

Ok, we got it to where he can see me come on. But it still tells me I can't connect to host. But he sees me as I connected. What's wrong? I know I saw this same problem somewhere but I forget where. Help!! haha...

Have you taken a look at this thread:
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...&f=23&t=004948
I found that I couln't get an IP connection unless I added an empire during the intial setups, see above link for details.
If you still have problems post what your network configuration: what operating system, name of any firewall software, any routers etc.

To start or stop XP Firewall
=> control panel => Network Connections => Lan or High-Speed Internet => highlight the Local Area Connection => right mouse click => properties => Advanced Tab
I saw that a lot of times and I was just about to give up in frustration when I tried a few more things and suddenly it started working.
Double check what you are doing at the client player setup. I saw what you are seeing if I didn't add an empire at the beginning of client setup and didn't have the multiplayer filename entered correctly.

Disable the internal XP firewall on the Host, see previous posting for instructions.
Just the two ports are needed, I did a range because it was easier to do that. Configure for both TCP and UDP.

Re: TCP/IP Games...
Ragnarok, if you like we could arrange a time where I could try connecting to your SE4 host to see if I can extend my theories on how to get this to work.
I am thinking that sometime I would like to host an SE4 TCP/IP and any debugging practice would be valuable experience.
e-mail me at sushibob@comcast.net if you are interested.

Re: TCP/IP Games...
Ok, firewall and stuff's done on both computers. The multiplayer filename has to be the same on both player and host's computer? I didn't think the player HAD to put in the filename to play. We'll try that sometime.

Same. Yeah, it's odd about that filename - what I call "voodoo tech support".
It worked for me when I entered one, wouldn't connect if I didn't.
