A few more for the files:

Voltron
Battle of the Planets (G-Force! (original Version, not the crappy one they're showing now))
Starjammers (?) - from Marvel Comics
Lyrans, Orion Pirates, Tholians, Gorn, Hydrans, Interstellar Concordium (ISC) - all from Star Fleet Battles (Andromedans from SFB were mentioned elsewhere on the forum, though not previously in this thread)

dmm - I was thinking "Josie and the Pussycats" too - probably because I, too, saw an article about the upcoming movie.

Deathstalker: any particular Lego space series? I've collected them on & off for years (since late 70's or so).

Edit: I almost forgot! "Pigs... In... Space..." (from the Muppet Show)!!

I've thought of a few other "classic" sci-fi universes, but very few lend themselves to SE4, mainly because most books focus on people and planets, rather than large, diverse fleets of ships.

Having said that, the races could be implemented, and what little ship information available could be expanded/improved/etc. to fill out the ship construction tree.

For example:
Dune: all the various Houses, etc. could become races (imagine fighting the Bene Gesserit - religious AND psychic...)

Niven's Known Universe: replace ruins with Slaver tech; add the Puppeteers and Kdatlyno...

Mars Attacks... OK, this one is silly, but still...

Battlefield Earth (decent book, BAD movie)...

That should be enough for now.

Very cool idea. Religous and Psychic wouldn't work though with a 2000 point start, but with a higher point start could be done.

I actually stared on this one but dropped it. May have to take another look. There is a "little green men" race available, I think on Universal Shipyards that is very close.

Psychlos! Yeah! The book has a whole universe of races that didn't get into the movie. Very workable, and since most of it is in book form only, leaves a lot of room for someone with some creativity and artistic talent.
P.S. Am I the only one who didn't think the movie was that bad? Didn't come close to the book, but to do that you'd need 8 hours of film and half of the annual GNP. If you just view it as it's own piece of work maybe?

How about the Foundation series by Asimov? All are biologically human, but there is enough variety in cultures and demeanors to make for different "races".

This might be an interesting idea for someone who is a good artist and has lots of time on their hands.

A lot of people like the Star Trek universe, but don't like to follow the storylines in the show. It would be interesting to have someone create shipsets and data files for a "Star Trek" universe before the original series (sort of like the new Trek series) and that would allow more freedom in ship designs etc...but still be Star Trek. Or you could even do the future too...

Myself, I sort of loosely based my Spoogy Universe on Star Trek - but with enough my own ideas to make a little different.

By the way, have you visited the Spoogy Information Database?
http://spoogyfederation.tripod.com/index.html

All this promotion for 80 hits. It's sad really.

Ok, there is a new Trek series in the works, but they have rejected a number of ideas so far. The current\old shows have covered SO much ground it is going to be hard to do much with the Trekverse (ie, Dominion war done, Borg done to death, Shapeshifters done, Klingon war vs Fed done.). This is my 2cents, have a show based on one of the following: An academy ship (similar to the Valiant from DS9), or the Federation breaks up and all go their seperate ways (could be fun, maybe based 50 years after breakup), StarTrek 50yrs after the Mirror Universe invades and wins, or a ship of Federation crew either trapped in the Mirror Universe or sent there to 'restore democracy and the federation' . Boy do I have too much time on my hands.
And on a seperate note, the new movie was going to be a sequel to the Insurrection storyline directed by Stewart but the lack of interest (ie, movie sucked) has killed that storyline. (too similar to Ashes of Eden by Shatner for me to really enjoy the movie.)

How about Gordon R. Dickson's Childe Cycle with the Dorsai, the Exotics, etc.
