Those who posted against SE in genereal seemed to prefer the FPS style space games or those that dhad action and "OOO pretty" type things to them. THey didn't seem like the type that could sit down for a good strategy game.

Which is funny considering GC2 is turn based, and conceptually based on Civilization...

But it does have a fairly good AI, and the ship construction it alittle more than I was expecting...they are comparing it to lego like. I'm going to get this, but I now it wont' compare to what I really want and will get with SE5. But there are some things in GC2 that would be cool to have in SE5, but I'm sure we will have some great modding...

Personally, I'm hoping that GritEcon + CarrierBattles + SE5 + Beta influence = Mindblowing Game

Gotta crack the whip and get working, tho...

I have been playing Space Empires since 2000. I was one of the first people to buy Gal Civ. I played Gal Civ for about a year before loosing interest. I have not lost interest in Space Empires IV and that can say a lot about the game. Sure it is basic, but for a game, especially a garage style game made buy basically one guy, to do so well over so many years, says more about the over all qaulity of the game than any post by any person who has never played the game could say.

People who judge games based mainly upon graphics and out dated reviews by people who only played the demo for abotu 20 minutes or so, shouldn't be reviewing games. Games are about game play and Space Empires IV, and soon to be V, have heart where heart counts, in game play, replayability, and long term enjoyment.

Space Empires is one of the most successful 4x games of this century. It has been King Of The Hill since 2000, and looks to be holding that title for many more years to come.

What I suppose I need most is AI guys, but second to that would be a hearty set of LOW POLY shipsets which have nice fighter and troop models. Followed by combat animations.

See:
The carrier battles mod thread for details

You see, chess is simple too.
and has some lousy graphics.

that sais all in my point of view.

imho SEIV is a very chess-like game. slow paced, but every single move matters.

This interesting as Galciv and SE4 are essentially the leaders in the space stragedy at the moment. I like them both but Galciv is Civilizations in space. I like the candy but after a few times playing the game I get bored and there is repition in gameplay. SE4 is a new experience every time and the modding community is simply incredible.

And there are disasters in GC2, just not ones that completely obliterate a planet completely randomly.

Realism in Sci-Fi Videogames is a sort of oxymoron considering we're already dealing with FTL travel, shields, laser blasters, aliens, and a visual map that is nowhere near scale and physics is largely meaningless.

You reference SEIV as an example of a game that does it. Well, the SE games have a pretty hardcore, but relatively small, following. They aren't mass market titles. They focus more on the deep strategy and attempt at realism than most games do. The focus there is on managing information, tweaking formulas etc.

GC2 however is a game first. It is supposed to be fun. It is as detailed as it can get without becoming overbearing. If I wanted to manage a spreadsheet, or play a game that took weeks of real-life time to build a ship or planetary improvement, I'd load of a SE game, or MoO3.

Games fail quite often when they go for realism over fun.
