Which shipsets are the best?
I think I have most of the shipsets that are available. Which ones are the best to use in any mod? I've always like the Spacesharks, but I don't like them breathing methane, so I change that to oxygen.

I have been using the Nostropholo for about a year now.
Things I like about them.

2. big bug eyes. Yep their cool
3. cool ships... goes with out saying...

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
There is no "best shipset." It is entirely a matter of personal preference.

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
perhaps you could state your preference
p.s. i love these threads and then doing a search on the older ones and comparing how people's tastes have changed over the years....

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
NOt that I have a preference, but I was just wandering what everyone thinks is the best shipset, or the ones they use the most often. With over 250+ sets to choose from, it's kind of hard to figure out which ones are best to play with in the many mods that are out there. I was just hoping to get an idea of what to play. I know that when you're playing a race, the data doesn't really count, because you're playing to your particular taste. But which ones would also be opponents to play against? They don't have to be the best looking sets in the world, either.

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
Oh, you mean AI strength, not prettiness of the pictures. That makes a big difference. Most of the best AIs are in the TDM Modpack. If you want to see which are the strongest, look for the AI Death Match threads by Master Belisaurius, which had AIs compteting against each other, and see which ones came out on top.

But can I take those TDM sets and put them in, say, a Proportions mod or any other mod that is radically different than the basic game? I guess I could take a set I want to play and rip out the AI stuff and create a new race with whatever parameters I want, but I don't necessarily want to do that.

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
Major mods such as Proportions need AI's tailored for them. If you insert a TDM AI, it will malfunction (i.e. not perform very well, and perhaps even "cheat" in silly but generally unhelpful ways).
The pictures have nothing concrete to do with the AI except for AI's that cleverly try to tailor themselves to match the artwork, but that's an aesthetic issue.
So, you can take the AI from a race designed for a mod like Proportions, and overwrite the AI for a shipset whose AI is designed for unmodded, or for some other mod, and the result should work fine in Proportions - it'll behave like the AI you copied into it, but look like the new shipset.

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
The only tech type mod (new components, technologies, etc) that you can use TDM AIs in is P&N Mod, but you first have to use SJ's converter program to make them compatible with the mod, which can be found on his website: http://www.geocities.com/hohoho611ca/
You can use TDM AIs in various system/quadrant mods fine, such as Admiral's System Mod, Quad Mod, Krsqk System Mod, and Fyron's Quadrant Mod. You should also be able to use them in some "mount mods," such as Deathstalker's Mount Mod.

Re: Which shipsets are the best?
As far as personal favourite shipsets (visually speaking) I have always liked the Zeta Reticuli and the Technocratic Enclave.
