Default OT - a suit of shining armour...

on monday I have to apear at a umnn party as a knight in shining armor. im considering makeing a suit out of cardboard and gluing aluminium foil to it, or if that doesent look good spray painting it silver.
but I need a patern or SOMETHING to start from. anyone have any ideas?
Ive googled around a bit, found some pictures and lots of places that sell the real thing, but havent found anything realy helpfull for what I want (it only has to Last one evening, take only a weekend to make and cheap.)

actualy, a copple of weeks ago the guys in our little sosial group took the girls out, we told them to dress up, then got some old clothes for then behind there backs and intended to cream them on a roundabout (middle of an intersection type) in the end they were so perrdy we changed our minds and took them to a nice resteant, unfortunaly we told them plan A, so this is what they came up with as revenge...

Your mission WHETHER OR NOT you choose to accept it is to compete in......

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SUPERHERO IDOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When: Monday 2 August 7pm

How: Please come dressed as A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR

*Supper will be provided. Judges decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. The organisers accept no liability for any damage to persons competing in the event or their personal property. Competitors acknowledge that while participation is in no way voluntary that they are fully responsible for any emotional or physical scarring that may be inflicted upon their own person or any third party. Although the organisers will make every attempt to ensure that the event is successful, enjoyment is at the participant’s discretion. Any competitor who is found to be tampering with any aspect of a fellow competitors dress, makeup or performance may be awarded extra points OR be eliminated from the competition dependent on how entertaining the sabotage is to the judges. Events may be recorded for quality control purposes (and so we can laugh at you later). Any participant who fails to show up will forfeit any rights they have to anything and punishment will be at the full discretion of the judges and remaining superheros. Superheros may feel free to invite superhero friends to compete but the judges ask that they be given prior warning detailing any additional competitors.

Try this:

http://www.sca.org

The Society for Creative Anachronism is a medevail recreation group that I've been a member of for nearly 10 years. We have to build our own armor for heavy combat. Our armor has to meet certain criteria for safety issues (safe combat?), but there might be something there that you can use.

At the very least, the site can put you in touch with SCA members near you. Most SCA'ers are willing to help someone out.

Instead of aluminum foil you might try silver spray paint. It will probably hold up better, and can be used on odd surfaces that won't take foil very well. Even cloth can be spray painted.

Oh, wow. SCAdians.

Greetings from Dragonspine. (Not an actual member, just enjoy their parties.)

Another way to whip up a quick suit of armor is to use camping foam, aluminum foil, and that crystal-clear packing tape.

Camping foam is cheap, so working out your own pattern won't be to bad, but it will hold curves and peaks better than cardboard. Put the aluminum foin on in strips, covering each strip with the tape and, of course, overlapping the tape onto previous strips or the uncovered surface of the foam. Try to keep the tape from folding ot catching itself, as this will cloud it.

This will work better for round shapes than cardboard.

I didn't get this design from SCA-folk, but from a more casual, unregulated, irregular event around here, where we put the padding on the weapons and not the people. Basically we make swords or whatever out of PCV and the camping foam and typically cover it the duct-tape. Then we knock eachother around without worry about 'suiting up' or anything else first. It's great for parties, and you can build and reasonable weild great, cartoony swords, axes, hammers, or whatever.

Amtgard, IFGS, or NERO? I played Amtgard for 16 years.

I don't beleive it is part of any of these organizations. Of course, I don't know where it came from, or from where the originators got the idea. They call it 'Bloodbowl', and I don't even know if it still happens with any regularity.

A note, for anyone who wants to try these things out. For saftey reasons, should any of these toys break, and they will eventually, it's time to scrap it and make a new one. Additionally, the foam will compress with use and over time will offer less and less padding. Again, time to scrap it and make a new one.

Since these things get absurdly large counter-weight is often necessary. A tennis or raquet ball filled with shot or pennies is frequently taped or otherwise fastened to the hilt.

If anyone is going to try this out, there are a couple of rules that make it a little more 'fair'. One is that no person may use a weapon in each hand unless those weapons are no taller than their sternum. Another is that no weapon may be dangerous on both ends. You may find that polearms are highly superior in one-on-one, and that's about the time you need to move to 'sword and board', just be sure to heavily padd the edges of the shield.
