freezing up in Colonies menu
SEIV freezes up in the Facil screen of the Colonies menu, whenever I R-click on a major facility (Spaceport or Spaceyard Facility 1). When I R-click on some of the others, it also seems to freeze, but if I click repeatedly on Close, it will respond after some time (< 1 minute); however, with the Spaceport, etc., I have waited for 5 minutes and nothing happens. I can usually exit the game with CTL-ALT-DEL, but occasionally the whole system freezes up and I have to switch it off.
I am running SE4 Version 1.19. I have turned Sound and CD music off in the Options menu, and also set "Allow CD Music" to
FALSE in the Settings file.
My system is:
Fujistsu Lifebook C-4235 with AMD-K6 3D cpu, 64 MB RAM, 935 MB free on hard drive, running Windows 98 (2nd ed.,
4.10.2222A).
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: freezing up in Colonies menu
Your problem is you are using a amd-k6. I work in the computer chip industry and the
the k6 is not a good gaming processor. Has problems with the floating point and mathc co-processor (which are both needed to handle graphics)
that is why they recommend a Pentium class machine. P1, P2, P3 and my love the all new P4

Re: freezing up in Colonies menu
You may be able to make the K6 work by closing all applications, virus scan, real player, turn off the screen saver and increase your swap file to twice the recommend size (personally do this just to help the OS out anyway.) change your system to network srv rather then desktop (this is a microsoft recommended suggestion that you can find in pc mag.)

Re: freezing up in Colonies menu
The problem may not be the AMD chip (since I am running SEIV on an AMD k6-2/450). If you have a straight K6 then that might be it, but a K6-2 or K6-3 should be fine. I have seen problems with notebooks and games. Often, the sound card in the notebook is non-standard and causes problems. If that is the case then you might try turning sound off in the game.
I'm not at all familiar with your particular system, so I don't know if the sound is the problem, but it is worth checking out. I have yet to run into a game that the K6-2 had a problem with (including SEIV).

Re: freezing up in Colonies menu
I have an AMD Athalon 500 mhz and SE IV runs without a hitch....the K-6...depends on cpu speed. But I used to have one and it didn't have too many problems (2 years ago anyway)..
but do turn off anything but systray and explorer...
maybe turn off sound...

That worked! Great, thanks for the suggestion. (Am still not sure which app was the problem, possibly the antivirus one. Will repeat more carefully, doing them one by one.)
Thanks to all who responded ...
