Default What game will my father-in-law like?

Hi all. My father-in-law just purchased a new computer, and is looking to buy some games. He's looking for something similar to Master of Orion, but he's particular; he didn't care for MoO2...he wants a game where the complexities arise out of fairly simple game mechanics. I noticed several SF wargames on this site, so the question is: what game is he most likely to appreciate?

He also used to love FireZone and Empire, because he'd make his own maps/scenarios with a WWII flavour. I noticed a game creation system on here, and I'm wondering about it as well. Does it have a good manual? Is it printed, or only on disc? Is it possible to work your way slowly into the games, concentrating on basics and then eventually learning the more complex aspects? Too much detail at first blush overwhelms him, but I think he appreciates the ability to manipulate those details more later, after he's grown comfortable with the game.

Any thoughts at all appreciated.

Space Empires IV Gold will most likely apeal to him then. It is the same genre of game as Master of Orion. It has simpler game mechanics than MOO2 does. Check out the demo.

You might consider The War Engine...there's quite a few differnt 'games' that come with it, including a WWII based one. It's very easy to learn, and the 'guts' are wide open for anyone to modify current themes, or to create their own.

I think Dominions II is going to be very popular, also. I had gotten burnt out on 'Age of Empire' type games, but Dom II has a lot of depth to it.
