Default Fear and Routing in Assassination attempts

It seems I can't make use of fear or fear items in assassination attempts, and I suppose this makes sense, but I am still confused. I know you cant retreat, but I thought you could rout during assassination phases; shouldnt + fear items cause enemy commanders to rout (if they fail their fear check)?

I think all routing by commanders or the assassin is suppressed during an assassination attempt, since retreating is disallowed and equals certain death. Bodyguards, however, can still be routed.

I thought for sure that I once had a commander set on retreat, someone tried to assassinate him, and he tried to retreat. He got to the edge of the screen, a puff of blood appeared, and he was nowhere to be seen on the map so I guess he died.

The puff of blood was your clue.

That happens if a commander is explicitly ordered to retreat and gets assassinated, and tries to carry out that retreat order, which is impossible.

It's kind of annoying that way.

However, I've never seen a commander choose to retreat on his own volition during an assassination. They've always fought to the death.

i agree, until now i have never seen a commander rout while being the victim of an assasination attempt. makes sense imho. Just imagine you are being surprised in a small room, maybe the kitchen and some guys tries to put you that dagger in the back. You have nowhere to run except to fight him.

its okay that way imho.

as Norfleet points out you can still make use of Fear as it can still affect the bodyguards.

The retreat order isn't ignored yet? It should be, since it's not likely to help except in somewhat unusual cases -- an immortal deliberately retreating and dying in his dominion before he gets cursed and horror-marked, say, or to deny capture of his magical items.

Oh, ok. I thought you meant the retreat command wouldn't be carried out.

RIght.

Sorry I think I was misunderstood. I meant: I had sort of thought that fear affects would do something other than make an enemy commander flee, such as make him quail or something (my idea: -2 defense, -3 attack), but I hadnt seen it have any affect at all.

Oh and I am sure we have all noticed that stealthy commanders caught patrolling behind enemy lines *will* retreat, even if doing so just means certain death (too bad actually: would like to see a percentage chance of escape in this cases), so there does seem to be a tiny inconsistancy.
