Question about protection and bless 9 earth

Ok, I would like to know please what I am missing in this math here on a Jotun Gode? Looking at the actual unit in recruitment que I found this about it's protection:
Base Protection-5
Current protection-13

Now, I do the math according to what the BASE unit in recruitment que has on and it comes out like this:
Base protection-5
Full leather Armor-Protection 6
Round sheild-Protection 3

Now going on the assumption that the leather armor and sheild are supposed to add thier protection values to the base protection then 5+6+3=14

So, if it adds up to 14 then why is it showing as 13? What calculation am I missing out on here?

On a similiar note, the same Jotun Gode was made into a prophet under a 9 earth/9 nature pretender by turn 3. In the manual, level 9 earth path on pretender will add armor value of +4. If I have to assume that the Jotun Gode's face value protection of 13 is accurate then given that 13+4=17 then why is my blessed Jotun Gode's protection value only 16? What calculation am I missing out on here? Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

P.S.:This is Jontunheim under normal theme. Scales are Order 3, Sloth 1, Cold 3, Growth 3, Misfortune 3, Drain 3. These scales are CURRENTLY in effect on the province that the Jotun Gode is in just to give all the facts.
