OT: String Theory
Does any one know anything about this? Also known as the M theory.
Basically it says that all things exsist in stings of demensional matter with Gravity being multi-demensional.
Very interesting. I cought a show about it on NOVA.

Re: OT: String Theory
All I know is that nobody -- even the people who created the theories -- really understands them. And the mathematics behind it are way too advanced for me to begin to understand any Version of string theory without the help of a Physics grad student. Definitely heavy stuff.

Re: OT: String Theory
and Membranes (called branes)
and there are 11 dimensions. Well actually there are 10 dimensions plus 1 (thats how they put it).
And "the Big Bang Theory" became the "2 branes touching released untold amounts of energy/matter into our brane".
I find the Last thing interesting because so much scientific "debunking" of so many subjects relied on the rule that "matter/energy cannot be created or destroyed". That hasnt changed but it gave us a whole new place to examine for possible answers
Quantum Theory now shows up in everything from computers to FTL drives to paranormal to supernatural to religious investigations. If you want your head to spin here are some links.

I always knew that the future was coming. But lately it seems to be coming faster and faster every day.

Re: OT: String Theory
I believe the 11-dimensional Version of string theory is the one that has garnered the most journal articles and general media attention. But I've heard Versions having anywhere from 7 to 23 dimensions (or, 6space+1time to 21space+2time, I think). All of it is pretty much theoretical, since any hypothesis can't be tested in a normal laboratory environment, only in particle accelerators (very small scale) and through astronomy (very large scale). The current everyday accepted model of physics of course has four dimensions (3+1), and the new theories incorporate those, along with "new" dimensions, to explain various properties. But, like I said... the math is way beyond me.

Re: OT: String Theory
I can't understand the dimensions thingy. Can you go into those dimensions? What would it be like? And most importantly does it hurt?
God sprayed Silly String, now look at this mess!

Re: OT: String Theory
the only string theory I understand is the one from Quantum Leap. That one I can understand. I like to think I can understand most things about science, but I don't even pretend to try to understand the string theory. I know I've heard of it from somewhere, but don't remember where. I was never good at the higher maths anyway.

Re: OT: String Theory
Worst thing about the M-theory is that it requires different mathematics to begin to shine and explain everything in the Universe. Should I explain that there is no such math around?

Re: OT: String Theory
It all sounds like a string of crap to me. Now watch it be accurate.

Re: OT: String Theory
String theory should bridge the gap between conventional physics (Einstein) and quantum physics: the first dealing preferrably with large masses, the other one mainly concentrating on atomic level and smaller. But as far as I understand it - which is not far - the theory is still lacking to explain something previously unexplained or predict some new and proveable effects.
