Fleet vs. Ship Tactics
I am not sure I understand how this works. But let me give it a shot.
When you assign a strategy to a fleet, then all ships in the fleet will follow that strategy. However, once the ships break formation they revert back to their ship class default strategy.
So if I want to send a fleet to blockade a planet, but destroy all the orbiting bases - but not destroy or attack the planet. I have to create a "Blockade" strategy and make sure that I do not allow ships to break formation within that strategy. I then go and assign the "Blockade" strategy to the fleet and it will destroy orbiting ships and bases but not attack the planet.
Did I get this right? Hope it works better in SEV.

Re: Fleet vs. Ship Tactics
You can set each ships individual strategy to blockaid I believe and if they break formation they will hopefully still do what you want. I could be wrong on this though as I am one of the few players who seldom uses tactical combat.

Re: Fleet vs. Ship Tactics
I thought that "breaking formation" was decided on a ship level. For example, if all your ships are set to "Maximum Range" and you have maximum range set up so that all ships break formation, then they will break formation when in a fleet (regardless what the fleet strategy is set to).
So what you'd need to do is set all your ship strategies to Blockade (or anything else that does not set ships to break formation), then set your fleet to blockade as well.
Again, I could be wrong.
Hope it works better in SEV as well...

Re: Fleet vs. Ship Tactics
So you have set both the individual ships and the fleet to the same strategy? The fleet strategy does not over-ride the ship strategy as long as the ships do not break formation? What a pain!

Re: Fleet vs. Ship Tactics
No, it's the opposite. Ships use the fleet strategy UNTIL they break formation. Then they use their own strategy.

Re: Fleet vs. Ship Tactics
Ok that is what I thought, that makes sense. So if I develop a fleet strategy (that does not have ships break formation) I can over-ride the individual ship strategies. The downside is that all ships in the fleet follow that strategy which may not be optimized for the individual ship, but it is better than nothing.

Sorry for the backwards advice...
I hope this works better in SE5.
