Default Family numbers

Is there any special reason why you would need to create a new component or weapons family number?
I was thinking of creating a afterburner component for ships to allow more movement in tactical combat. I was just going to cut and paste the one for the fighters and change the size, cost and to allow it to be used on ships. Is this an acceptable way to do it?

Default Re: Family numbers

The family numbers just separate components that are right next to each other in the text file.

So, with a mesonbLaster V, followed by an Antiproton beam I, the different family numbers mean
-don't upgrade to the AP I.
-don't collapse the AP I into the MB when "show only latest" is on.
-etc.

Its not critical to have different numbers, but having them different allows you to move the components around without running into too many problems.
