Question for those who were/are in the armed services...

I'm redoing the tonnages in SE4, in order to make units/fighter/etc. more in line with their KT rating, I'm changing them to "forces" (i.e., a fighter squadron or a troop battalion).

My question is, how many tanks/mobile infantry are in a brigade/battalion/company/platton ...and what about fighters, is it similiar to groud forces, and how many is a squadron?

I'm not asking for precise numbers and ranges, just the "typical" amount give or take a bit.

Any help would be appreciated, thanx.

tank units: my data is a bit old (1970's TO & E) but goes like this: 5 tanks per platoon; 17 tanks per company, 54 (?) for Battalion, 155 (?) per brigade (tank pure).

relaize in reality these units get attached/cross-attached to infantry units and vice-versa...

also they had a few APC types in their HQ & Support companies...at least they did back when I got beat up by pig iron

seems to me later tank TO & E had 4 tanks per platoon but not sure...would lower numbers to company/battalion/brigade

If my memory serves me I think an infantry platoon is about 50 men, a company about 150 and a battalion about 1200-1500 for the USA. 3 Battalions per regiment, 2-3 regiments per division depending on type, light, mountain, etc plus support units.

I am going on way back memory here: a fighter section/flight is about 4 aircraft with a squadron 12-15 (3-4 flights), a wing has 3-4 squadrons, so about 50-60 aircraft (?) ....

this is air force, not sure what the heck the Navy structure is...

Soviet-style armies run 3 tank platoons, 3 platoons + command tank to make a company.

A USN carrier air group consists of 24 fighters (F-14), 34 strike aircraft (mostly F/A-18 nowadays, used to be A-6), 10 AWS aircraft (S-3), 6 ASW helicopters, 4 ECM (modified A-6), 4 radar (E-2C, kind of a pocket AWACS) and 4 tankers (KA-6D).

French carriers have 39 aircraft, types?

The above naval info is from a 1993 book, so it could have changed a bit.

I have a lot more data on WWII carrier air Groups. The split was between fighter, dive bombers & topredo bombers. I believe each type was organized as a single squadron. The total numbers per carrier went up throughout the war as they got more creative about packing 'em in, and the ratio of fighters to bombers was also steadily increasing. Just a sample:

At Midway, Enterprise carried 79 total - 27 ftr, 37 dbmr, 15 tbmr. Hornet had 69 total - 17 ftr, 38 dbmr, 14 tbmr. Yorktown had 75 - 25 ftr, 37 dbmr, 13 tbmr.

By the end of the war, Saratoga (Yorktown's sister ship) had 96 ftr, 15 each dbmr & tbmr).

On the other side, at Midway Kaga had 30 ftr, 23 dbmr, 30 tbmr. The other Japanese carriers at Midway carried 21 each type. Japanese carriers usually carried less than rated capacity (opposite of USN practice), which was about 90 for Akagi & Kaga, about 70 for Soryu & Hiryu, about 85 for Shokaku & Zuikaku. This is because of internal design problems of their carriers as well as less efficient folding wing designs than the US planes, and because they never adopted the US practice of storing aircraft on deck.

A USAF fighter squadron is typically 18 aircraft. A fighter wing is 3 (sometimes 2 or 4) squadrons.

I am currently writing a sci-fi novel, and awhile back I took a little time to figure out the organization for a Space Marine Corps in the far off future. I looked all over the place trying to find info on modern unit compliments, and used what info I found as a starting point for what I did. It is by no means what the real-world modern military is like, but it is set for a Corp made up of several million soldiers, like an army in SEIV might be consist of. Mabye it will help you.

Note: numbers in () are the number of troop/vehicles/aircraft per unit type.

Ok guys..here is the current structure..the old 17 tanks to a company was the old "H" series that went out in 1986. The number of tanks in a US Army platoon is 4. 3 Platoons to a company and 3 companies to a battalion, 3 battalions to a brigade. Not every battalion in a brigade is armor though, heavy mech has 4 Bradleys (Infantry fighting vehicles) to a platoon...at Brigade level there is either 2 tank and 1 infantry battalion or vice versa. During the late eigthies and earl;y nineties there were 4 companies per battalion but this was reduced to the current 3 beginning in 96. The US Army attack helicopter batalions consist of 24 Apaches. The USAF Attack Squadrons usually consist of 18 (A10) aircraft, the fighter squadrons consist of 24 (F16 or F15). Bomber squadrons vary from 6 to around 12. The US Navy fighter squadron consists of 12 aircraft (F14 or F18). Allied squadrons vary from country to country but are typically 12 to 18. Myself, I was in the Army from 86 through 97, with the 4/9 (MANCU) light infantry battalion and 501st airbone brigade in Alaska, and with the 1st Cav at Ft. Hood.
