Magic item ideas redux
I hope nobody minds, and that this thread stays civil.
Autocrossbow - 2 Earth 1 Air Cons 4
This complex, mechanical looking crossbow shoots four crossbow bolts instead of one when shot - but it is as slow as any crossbow.
Roaring Arbalest - 2 Earth 2 Air Cons 6
This massive crossbow takes a long time to load, but when shot it unleashes it's powers. The massive bolts used by this device are propeled into unbelievable speeds and a single hit can kill much larger things than humans. Armour provides little comfort when the bolt hit's it target with power that can stun and injure even dragons.
Shoots a bolt that does 38 points of AP damage with an AoE 1 Stun effect.
Oh yes. It shoots every three turns.

The autocrossbow doesn't sound very good. Why not just buy four crossbowmen?
Fire needs some better items:
Firestorm: Unique fire artefact. It's a bow that lets the wielder cast flaming arrows without gems. Also does hefty damage and grants fire immunity.
Bottled Wisps: Low level fire accessory. This bottle contains a number of wisps which are released when the battle begins.
Elemental cloak: Mid level fire armour. It's essentially a cheaper version of the elemental armour, designed for mages rather than melee combatants.
*edit: This one might be rather unbalanced, now that I think about it. Consider it scrapped.*

"Firestarter", or Volcano, Armageddon Bow, something.
As far as why you wouldn't buy 4 crossbowmen instead of the Auto-Crossbow : think of a high-air mage + astral : high precision plus astral weapon, 4 shots instead of one. Or, putting it on your 0-upkeep summoned commanders like black servants.
Hrm. Y'know : unique items that _aren't_ level 8 construction might be kinda nice. After all - a lot of the artifact / uniques relatively suck. But if they were moved downwards in the research tree, still unique? Some artifacts that no one currently bothers with (for instance, because there are non-unique items almost as good, or better, for fewer gems) : the unique staff that gives death plus 1 : if that were construction 2, people would have more choices. Now, it's either research alt-3 for SCs, _or_ construction 7, enchantment 7, or construction 8, to try to get the uniques before someone else does.
But : if there was unique items at const-3? A minor unique summons at conj-4 (a named lamia queen, or an F3 Prine of Fire elemental)? Maybe the new mod commands will let us do things like that - imagine, 2 unique uber black servants at conj-3, etc.

Lowly unique items and summons sounds interesing...
...could imagine research races for unique +1 path boosters...
...but then again, there might be a balance problem if some nations get access to things that were not meant for them, and it might get boring if an opponent bases its strategy on winning the race...
...however, if there would be a single unique pair of Earth Boots in Construction 4, this would be a nice reward for a good researcher, but would not breakk anything...

A spear with decent states. Gives Animal Awe and summons two Hama Dryads at the start of a battle.
Biting Spear Water 3 Cons 4
This spear has been fashioned from the bones of sea monsters. Sometimes it will sprout barbs when it hit's it target, causing almost unmendable bleeding.
Has a chance to inflict Bleed effect on the target it hits.
Moon Spear Astral 3 Cons 6
This spear has been fashioned from magic metal that can slay magical creatures with ease.
IIRC Ether Lords have spears, but there's no Moon Spears. Hmm'e.
