Demo Strategies
Demo comes out... I arrive at work two hours later then planned. So what is one of the first things I do once I get here...
I quickly played around with some opening strategies. One that I found that works well is Arcoscephale with a water 9 bless and Wind Riders.
The plus +4 defense added to the base 17 makes a great defensive unit. Spear, Lance, Hoof are all nice.
I chose Mother of Rivers as my pretender base and I left her awake so I could collect her water gems. I made a Wind Lord my profit. I made him an ice sword and a black steel kite shield. He can be fully equiped and ready to go this way on your 4th or 5th turn (depending if you alchemy a water gem).
Combine him with 6 or 7 basic wind riders, hold and attack rear and you can really tear things up. Once you hit 20 or wind riders you don't even need a walking army and you have a very flexible fighting force.
You could equip 2 wind lords this way every 5 turns with your starting resources. Not sure if that is the best use the gems but it is interesting. Later once they rack up some experience you can equip them with some better items.
Anyways... just something fun I was playing around with. Hopefully the full game will arrive today (shipped Monday).
What are you guys doing with the demo?

Re: Demo Strategies
Interesting, I will have to try it out. Do you mind if I add that to the demo guide I am doing?
I've been playing with Agartha mostly, and gave Atlantis a spin. Agartha is nice and I've been playing with W9/E4 Olm. I've had him to be Dormant, and so far I haven't yet figured combat use for him. The Defence and Reinvigoration bless is nice for the clumsy Agarthans, but is it the best one? Hmmmm, I do not know.
Rhuax Pact is a great spell if you shoot for Conj 3. Even a lucky Earth Reader can cast it and it produces a good number of Magma Children for 2 gems! It's not hard to mass fiery taskforces which can defeat and rout largish enemy forces.
Did you try out Oreiads with early Arco? They are freaking awesome. One of my faves from new things. Assasin/seductres with 2A along other magics. 2A means you can shoot Lightning Bolts in those commander vs commander battles and I've had an Oreiad kill a mounted commander who drove up to her and then just oogled at her while the Oreiad cast Lightning Bolt on him. I'd give them a Pendant of Luck for extra security.

Re: Demo Strategies
Sure your welcome to include if you think it is worthwhile.
I haven't done much with the spells yet. It takes A LOT of time to really wrap you head around the effective use of magic in the early game.

Re: Demo Strategies
Hmm, why don't you go and share your pretender design at the God Design Initiative thread? I'm interested in it.
Oreiads are wonderful. Try them out. They get a healthy dose of Nature magic too so later on they could even cast Charm.

Re: Demo Strategies
Oreiads are a bit expensive to use as assassins.

Re: Demo Strategies
Yes, but they can be used as them. =) I used them as support mages too, but if the army had to wait for a while for some reason the Oreiads could sneak to enemy lands and wreak havoc.
I sooo like them. They're pretty too. :3

Re: Demo Strategies
I remember in Dom2 a charming "assassin" wouldn't actually get to keep the conquests - or at least, an assassin with the Tartarian Chains wouldn't. Maybe the spell Charm works differently, or maybe they've changed things.
I was sad to discover this - I thought I'd be getting a pile of free decked out Tartarians with my Chains-wielding Belial, but once I converted them they just vanished.

Re: Demo Strategies
When fighting againist Kailasa i found it is best to use armoured troops with shields with archer support. Alot of Kailasa units are unarmoured and have no shields meaning you can use even the "useless" slingers to take out armies of monkeys. If your going build troops, never build anything with no shields or low protection since Kailasa have very very cheap ranged units and will slaughter you if your not prepared. Spells like blade wind i found are best combat spells to use againist them too since its just like another volley of missiles. So far i cant find any good summons to use since theres only like drakes to use cuz of the research limit.
Both Arcoscephale and Marverni, which i have played so far have good enough armoured shielded troops.

Re: Demo Strategies
Speaking of Kailasa, does anyone know of Fire Arrows applies on Sticks and Stones?

I've been playing with a F9 dragon. The blessable units with spears are pretty good, they have decent protection compared to other troops, and the extra attack can be very handy (and obviously 6AP damage is great).
So far I'm doing great, I'm annihiliating the indies, but my coastlines are threatend from the sea, which I cannot enter, and that poses quite a threat right now. I'm also getting closer to Abysia, so conflict is inevitable.
Well see how things go from there
