I do not know whats more adictive
Honestly, I do not know what is more adictive, this game, or the editing of this game.
I have to be frank about this, I think the game is great, but I often get board with my current game quickly, and find myself working on other aspects of the game such as this forum, polishing up the UCP races, working on new races, reading up on reviews, writing reviews, etc the list is endless.
For me, creating something new and unique, even if its been done to death, is still fun as helk, and I love every minute of it.
I often get board, and go through the races one by one just looking at them and the AI and trying to figure out how it all works.
I am now working on a new race, and making my own speech file.
I even at one point decided that I wanted to practice on my masking so I re-masked the Battlestar Galactica ships.
I think that this game offers so much more than game play, it offers a dynamically unlimited creative adventure for the player to explore far beyond just game play.
If all games allowed the players this creative ability, then computer gaming would be far more adicitive than it is now. Perhaps that is why they do not.

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
Right now I'm working on two new AI's plus continuing to polish the Rage. If I get past turn 50 without stopping, making changes and starting over, I feel like I've played a long game. Strange thing is, I'm having a bLast doing it.
I don't think I've ever had as good a gaming experience as this.

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
If I had the time and a better understanding of how the AI files worked I think I would face your dilemea also. Thankfully I don't so I tend to play more and fiddle less. I'm also glad there are so many other talented people in this community who don't mind sharing their work. This is the friendliest group of gaming people I have ever run across. Thanks all.

lol - "Polishing my Rage". If that's not a double entendre it should be. lol

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
I've been finding I spend about 5-6 hours a day working on races, while I only spend about 1-2 hours actually playing the game. Like Alpha Kodiak, I rarely make it past turn 60 before I'm restarting because I made a significant 'tweak' to one of my AI. Right now I'm nearly done with AI's for BFG Chaos, Imperial, Ork and Eldar while I'm starting a new one for my favorite SFB race (at least thier ships will be a lot easier), and am continuously working with the Zorians and Atraikians to improve them.

dogscoff: LOL...weren't you the one that started the evil 'Sex and SEIV' thread? Is that all you think about? Sex or SEIV? heh heh (not that there's anything wrong with that )
Atraikius: You know, I just found out about BFG the other day. I was wondering if 40K had a fleet system. I considered throwing something together because 40K has some rilly cool units, but I'd love to see what ya come up with! How do you fill out some of those fleets? The shipsets aren't very extensive. Also, is it just me, or did you only find pics of the models themselves? (no cg or art)

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
Zen,
Since most of the ships (at least Imperial and Chaos) are fairly modular, I made 3d models of the various pieces from the sprues and put them together like a model. Since their ships are all similar and use many of the same pieces, I just changed the scaling and used other 'pieces' to make the sizes that aren't covered. For troops I just scaned some pics out of some White Dwarfs for now until I can finish making 3d models of a pLastic Space Marine, Termie, and Dread. Its taking long enough that I'm seriously considering grabbing them from Chaos Gate, Rites of War, or Imperial Legions (? - the epic one from a few years back) or taking some pictures of my own figures to use. I also have gathered some old Rogue Trader stuff that has some black and white artwork of ships from the early days.
Once I finally finish with the BFG ship sets, I am planning on trying to make a map based off the Gothic Sector.

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
Absoulutely I spend more time modding than playing... infact if the game weren't moddable, I doubt we'd all still be here (at this forum), we'd be playing something else!
What I wonder, is if SE4 will survive the release of Moo3... personally, I think that the fanfare over SE4 might die out. Only time will tell...

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
I know for a fact I spend FAR more time modding than I do playing =) Like Kodiak, if I get past turn 50 in a game, it's a long game for me. =) When I play, I've usually got a notepad open on the other monitor making notes about tweaks and bugfixes. And of course a web browser open to this forum that I update while the computer chugs through it's turns. =)

Re: I do not know whats more adictive
Trachmyr: I think SE4 will survive...they're two really different games. Even MOO3 won't be as customizable as SE4 (which, to me, is one of the main reasons it's currently spanking other products)...the only customization is in-game ship design (for now). It actually is starting to sound a lot like Imperium Galactica II (which I own but have yet to play beyond the tutorials ).
Atraikius: If you need help with a few of the pics (e.g., the troops) let me know... I downloaded something on the order of five megs worth of stuff I scoured the Web for. Actually, I'll edit and send you a few pics by e-mail if it's cool.
Zen (going wildly OT)
