What is this game? Does anyone know anything about it?

Stratego

Richard and I have a nice wooden boxed version of Stratego. It's a great game. I haven't played the software version.

It could be very nicely java'd for online play though

I thought Stratego was neat when I was about 9(?) years old and found one of those old wooden versions of it. I was then given several copies of the new plastic version by several people all at once for my birthday.

I also have a neat similar naval game made by someone in the 50's or 60's.

I think it's too deterministic in its mechanics though to be very interesting long-term, and to play well, one needs to memorize which enemies have moved and which have been exposed. Still, it's a classic and not too bad as a VERY early/simple intro to wargames with fog of war, though.

I think there's a review of a PC version from a few years ago on The Wargamer... let's see... ya, HERE - were you talking about that 1998 PC version?

I didn’t know there was a PC version but logic would dictate… I have a new plastic board version sitting about 10 inches from me right now. I started teaching my son how to play just two days ago and I will be teaching my daughter starting tomorrow. I thought that by using this game, Battleship, and Risk it would allow my kids to get introduced to strategy games before we move to more challenging ones. Such as Chess or the SE series! I have never played an on-line game, ever! My MP games have always been played with everyone in one room.

I have the PC adaption of the game.

Ok, it's not as challenging a Chess, and it's harder than Checkers. You can play it with a kid and not worry if it's too hard. It's fun and doesn't last so long it gets boring like Monopoly.

The pieces can be arranged different each game, but there are likely only so many play styles. So if you play it enough, it can be worn out.

But the PC version is ok. It's like Battleship, you play it to kill an hour.
