Re: how to control the battle?
nope, all you can do is script your guys and then watch them duke it out.. hoping the AI doesn't over-ride your orders.

The game is made to be a PbEM game (play by email).
The players are usually not connected to the server when the battles are decided.

Re: How to control the battle??!
You can't order your forces to attack, see that the enemy has knights and archers, and then order your cheap troops to slow the knights while your own knights go around the enemy knights and attack their archers and commanders.
You can, however, press 't' to give orders to your army before you generate the new turn. Cheap units like militia can be set at Hold And Attack - Enemy Cavalry, your own knights can be set to Attack - Rear, and you can choose where in the battlefield they start.
You can give more detailed orders to your commanders, but only the turn before the battle. Commanders with bows can Fire - Rear if they have missile weapons, thus being able to fire at the direction of enemy commanders. You can tell your mages exactly what they should do in the first five turns of battle, like: Phoenix Power (Conj 3, +1 to Fire magic), Falling Fires, Falling Fires, Falling Fires, Falling Fires. You can't choose where the spells are cast.
