Fractal Function Original/Concept Pics?
Hey all,
Was looking into converting the SEIV Fractal Function, one of my favorites, to SEV but can't find the base pics anywhere. I remember Oleg linking the site he got the Julia set pics from but that was years ago. I would use the ones from the ship set but am hoping to maybe find better resolution images.
Anyone have any idea where they may be? I googled for an hour and only found the original picture for the space station and race portrait.
Think it would be cool to have this in SEV.

The problem is, you'd need to make 3d models to port it to SEV. It'd be cool to have, but that'd involve, like...effort.

Weren't the ships just cones with the fractal texture applied? Or was that the Fractalians...

Re: Fractal Function Original/Concept Pics?
Not sure how he did it it, being that SEIV didn't actually require 3D models, I think they were just the 2D pics lifted off the internet and resized for the tactical/system map.
For SEV I was just going to make some generic almost flat black plates and past a texture on each side, then trim down the model to as close to the actual pic as possible so there isn't a big black disk surrounding it.

That was the Fractalians. Fractal Function was all 2D patterns in shades of blue.

You'd be better off with some other type of primitive, as an almost flat, thin object is invisible or nearly so at an angle. Then there's distortion of the pictures on the side as it turns.
A sphere might be your best bet, or an ovaloid. The problem with the fractal patterns in a 3d engine is that, to TRULY make them, you'd need large numbers of triangles, which would eat video memory like crazy.
It isn't impossible, mind you, just something that I think would be on the trying side.

I don't mind it disappearing when seen from the side, just have 2D be part of its race characteristics.

I'd delete any "2d" set in a heart-beat. It would be really annoying for gameplay (much like "invisible" sets like the Jrii). Just use some spheres and be done with it.

A thin rectangle or amalgamation of rectangles with a fractal texture might work out nicely.

Thin but still very clearly visible from all angles?
