NEW file?
PBEM game, saved gamed fails to load (save game failed to load), I try again, again nothing, I redownload the zip, cut and paste the 2 files and I noticed there is another file with the extension new. The redownloaded files still refuse to load. What is this file?

Re: NEW file?
Why not ask your opponent what he did, since it was he that sent you the files?. The only files that should be in the zip are the 2 for the game, spemlXXX.cmt and .dat. I have never herd of a ".new" file, so that is his as well.
Cheers

Re: NEW file?
I would agree with you, only that in the zip file there are the 2 files, no sign of the .new file. So, it looks like it was created sometime after I received it, but I have no idea how or why.
the .cmt file is 1KB
the .dat is about 1.8MB
the .new is 364KB.
I moved the 3 files from the game's directory to another and re copied the zip files there and game loaded fine with no .new file.
Oh well.
Thanks for replying.

Re: NEW file?
Digging round in the code - that is actually a temporary scratch file created in the PBEM tournament game code. So we do have .new files, but the end user usually does not see them. (been a while since I coded that so had forgotten)
- Were you (or your opponent) trying to play a PBEM tournament
- Did you try to load a regular PBEM game on the tournament page (perhaps you unzipped to the \tournaments folder and not the \PBEM games one)
Cheers

Re: NEW file?
No tournament, regular battle.
I have a shortcut for the PBEM folder so no mistakes done copying the files either. (and yes I also checked )
Oh, I have the latest CD version if that matters.
EDIT:lastest...pff

Re: NEW file?
Was this "regular battle" perhaps created from a scenario ( or custom map ) or was it a normal generated PBEM battle ?

Re: NEW file?
Hmm, I don't know, I assume an auto generated PBEM battle, but I will have to ask the other guy since he started the game.

Re: NEW file?
This .new file.. what was it numbered and what were the numbers on the PBEM CMT and DAT ?
One of the real problems dealing with reports about secure PBEM going bad is there is NO way for us to know for certain that everybody involved handled things exactly the way they are supposed to be handled.
It MAY have been a corrupt zip. This can happen. When you say the "redownloaded files still refuse to load" does that mean you asked him to re-zip his files and re-send or did you simply un-zip the old ones ?? If you did use re-sent files the second time did he rezip his files or just send you the same zip he sent the first time ?
It's all important information

Re: NEW file?
I am still waiting for his reply about the battle map, he is busy.
He sent the files again (but don't know if it was a new packaged or the same). BUT, what I did was use the original email sent by him (not the one after I asked him to send it again) and redownloaded the file, unzipped it, moved the 3 files in the PBEM directory to another one, and copied the 2 files contained in the zip file in the PBEM directory. Game worked.
The number for all files involved is 003, including the .new file.
I also asked him what he uses to zip files.
I use winrar 3.70, I already know he doesn't use winrar.

Re: NEW file?
ok, he uses powerarchiver version 9.64.03 (2006 date as he told me)
Also, the map we play is autogenerated.
