Re: [Bit OT] Need help with finding something
Elite II? We'll I'll be...
I'm going to follow that one up, but I'm still open to any suggestions, even if you think I've tried them before.

Re: [Bit OT] Need help with finding something
The BBC recently did a programme about astronomy with lots of snazzy CGI. I just had a look at the website and couldn't find any Milky Way images. Didn't look too hard though. Some interesting stuff there anyway, mind you.
One other possibilty - find the website for the Milky Way chocolate bar (Nestle I think) and maybe (just maybe) they'll have something. That is getting a bit desperate though.

[Bit OT] Need help with finding something
I know this might sound like a somewhat odd request, but if anyone could help me, I'd very much appreciate it. I'm looking for a top-down view image of the Milky Way Galaxy that is reasonably accurate, clear, and detailed as can be. It can be at a slight angle, but top-down would be preferred. I've been trying for a few months on and off now to find such an image, but to no avail.
Anyway, any assitance would be welcome.

Re: [Bit OT] Need help with finding something
The only place I recall ever seeing one is in Elite II Frontier. If you have that game (You could probably pick it up second hand for a small amount) go to the galaxy map and zoom right out. Then you'll have to find a way of grabbing the screenshot. Other than that I can't suggest anything you haven't already tried (probably)

Re: [Bit OT] Need help with finding something
NASA gennerally doesn't do CGI, I think, which is what a milky way image would HAVE to be (well, CGI or other art.. you get the idea. No pictures)

Re: [Bit OT] Need help with finding something
While it is quite imposible for anyone to actually take a photo of the milkyway considering where you would have to be sitting to take the picture
Nasa and in particular the huble space telescope has taken several pictures of similar in design galaxies to our own milkyway.

A search for "spiral galaxy" on http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html had 116 hits. Some of them are very good.
