How do I use victory points?

How do I set up Arduria to work with victory points?
The .map file specifies victory points. When I choose during setup to set victory points, there are a number of settings to set (including a slider that I can set to 11, the recommended number). But I'm a little nervous because I'd hate to be 100 turns in only to learn that I screwed up. Can I just set the slider to 11 and it will work? Also, how does one know how many victory points one has?
