For your approval: The Fourth Age Man
this is for the Fourth Age project.
Here is what I've put together on the NEW FACE OF MAN! I'd like to see what people think and even do a sort of informal vouching, taking suggestions and making changes if people think there's a better way. it's not so different from the old stuff, and I try to keep a continuity in the narrative and style.
'Man' : "The feudal kingdom of Man suffers under an ancient curse which has begun to express itself in terrible new ways. The curse has drained the once enchanted land of all magic; the witches and wardens of ages past disappeared. Now it brings terrible plagues to harry the populace constantly, and the great cities of Man are becoming emptied. The people have become disillusioned with explanations of foul curses and gods, arcane practitioners are persecuted, and the old priesthoods have been abolished. A parlimentary house of commons has ascended and decreed the Orders of Supremacy, which grant a monarchy absolute power. The monarch has established a new priesthood under his own command, and in this space new dynamics of power and intrigue have emerged. Politics and philosophy rather than the theology and magic now dominate discourse. Magistrates enforce a conformity and persecute bandits and anyone who is a bit out of the ordinary. Naturalists specialized in mechanics, physics, biology, and chemistry pontificate on the virtues of science.\n\n
Races: Humans\n\n
Military: lots of missile weapons, cheap militia, elite troops, privateers, machines produced by naturalists\n\n
Magic: No magic, but natural philosophers and scientists who produce machines, chemicals, and other wonders.\n\n
Priests: weak priests who obey the monarch."
'Militia' : "The militia are an institutional core of the military of Man. Generally very poorly trained, they are unable to respond to overland emergences and are reletively ineffective in combat. However the new monarchs demand military service from most members of the population, and maintain informal and decentralised infrastructures that allow local militias to be mustered and pushed into battle at minimal cost. Militia are armed locally, and weaponry and armor they possess always varies, but is typically of poor quality.",
'*Veteran' : "Veterans are elite footsoldiers of man. Often choosen from amongst the finest militia, the train to handle weapons of war and march. They inspire confidence in the people and even common men with no battle experience will fight without regard for danger or death when amongst the veteran soldiers. Veterans are typically armed with pikes, halberds, maces, or swords.",
'Demilance' : "The Demilances are the primarly cavalry of Man. They typically wear light armor and ride unbarded horses, they are armed with a light lance and pistol.",
'Man-at-arms' : "The Men-at-arms are very rare, but highly trained. they are the heavy cavalry of man. They wear heavy armor, ride heavy, barded, horses, and wield lances.",
'Longbowman' : "The longbowmen are highly trained and effective warriors. they carry large hand bows of yew and can fire quickly and accurately even over large distances. However these soldiers are giving way to unskilled troops carrying weapons which are cheaper to produce and require very little training.",
'Arquebusier' : "Arquebusiers are troops trained to fire the heavy arquebus gun. The guns have poor accuracy and are dangerous to use, but are cheaper to produce than crossbows and bolts and easier to train for than hand bows. When fired in mass, despite their poor accuracy, they can wreak havoc on even heavily armored cavalry.",
'Scout' : "Scouts pass unseen through enemy territory to bring back reports on troop movements. The information they provide is invaluable to the prudent warlord.",

'Lieutenent' : "The Lieutenents are the leaders of the armies of man, and most notably of the local militia. They are responsible for maintaining the muster rolls, as well as surveying the local populations for weapons, armor, and horses.",
'Magistrates' : "The magistrates are the judges, masters, and civic overseers of the shires and principalities of Man. They are keen to hunt out trouble makers and quell disorder.",
'Naturalists' : "The naturalists are scientists-philosophers. Rational and analytical, they grind out days over lit workbenches, experimenting with machines and chemicals, or debating and disussing in their laboratories and private dwellings."
'Privateers' : "Privateers are private capitans of merchant ships or war vessels, but who serve the monarch. They often ferry troops and goods, as well as piratize neighboring fleets."
*this name is a bit of a placeholder and may change
I've got some framework started on Marignon. I'll post that when I get it worked out a bit more. overall, Mari's troops will probably stay the same, but add in some firearms. they're already pretty "early modern" in Dominions.
