Map Database
Has anyone done one?
If so can you send me as just starting one & will speed up also anyone with maps post a link here if you like & will add.
Doing for both games in excel as can get free readers fields thought of so far for easy searching in no particular order.
map no (plus MBT or WW2)
name
height
width
region (as in country)
theatre (as in area i.e. Asia, Central Europe)
Terrain 3 fields ( My idea of as in open, farmland, jungle, urban, hills, dessert, bad (mud rough swamps), water (river, beach island))
Winter
M, D>, D< ( My idea of type of random engagement good for meeting or defend.
PBEM (my idea of balance for PBEM only rating if seems good then you lot can argue modify)
Any other suggestions but this should allow sorting for say size of map country theatre terrain type or size meeting type PBEM
Note this is a long way off just started when I thought some one might have done already.
Eventual aim is to put all maps in one folder sorted by Theatre Size perhaps Terrain Type so finding a suitable map is faster.

Re: Map Database
Good idea. I started working on something like this for Scenarios/Campaigns but it would have been an online searchable database.

Re: Map Database
This way lets people tinker with it as they feel fit convert to whatever datadase they are happy with & probably arrange search criteria better than a web based version.

The one I was working on was MySQL based and would allow users to manipulate it and export it to the format of their choice for download.
Online also allows those interested to contribute, sort of like a wiki where you have to sign up and be approved to be able to edit (to keep changes from being made by passer bys). I think I deleted what I had up so before from my site, maybe I'll put it back up and see if there is any interest. If I had any php skills I would love to see something like this by for WinSP;
ASL Scenario Archive

Re: Map Database
Nice good game to.
Considered doing scenerios but tend to be one shot plays & to give any idea of balance or whatever I would have to play them all. Actually could do reasonably quickly using Scenhack for basics sides date etc.
I have no web skills will do WW2 & send you if like more than happy for you to adapt as see fit & give nice presentation. Just thought it was time to give something back as taken / learned quite a bit from this little community. Also knowing me probably hacked a few people off in the process but hey no brain surgeon so life motto help or make more people smile than the reverse. Then if there does happen to be someone in charge I might get to have a go at him it about there missmanagement of the whole affair.

Re: Map Database
It wouldn't need to be as comprehensive as the ASL one but something along those lines I think would be well worth the effort.

Re: Map Database
This is just for comments its in excel at the moment so anybody can open with open office I think its called, free anyhow & its not in database just your basic spreadsheet.
Have done first 15 Scenerios roughly nothing is in any specific order yet its setup for data entry.
Key
Height & Width as in map size
D< Defender on left
>D Defender on right
Meeting
Y means its ok P its poor nothing nuff said
Ter1-4
Predominant terrain types some have numbers after nothing or 1 is light 3 is heavy so Rough 3 means there is a lot of it
Woods is normal forrest is heavy
Village, Town, City on size
I will sort them better so all refrences to trees etc are in the same column though not sure if they are realy usefull.
Special
This will include Winter Amphib Rivers cratered terrain & may try & sort into a few other catogries like urban & cover level based on Ter1-4.
Region & Area feel free to correct my geography no expert & a couple have ?? by them as not sure. Area is the main one most are done.
If you set to sort by area then region you will get a nice idea of the maps available.
Notice I have taken som liberties to make sorting easier.
For instance Normandy is Fr. Normandy so it appears by France.
Russia is E Russia so it apears by Europe East.
Any ideas feel free & corrections or missing geography please post scenerio No it applies to & change

I couldn't open it in my copy of Excel. Have to try OpenOffice on my wife's PC later.
