Default Is it me or...

Has the AI gotten tougher?

In my current game I am getting hammered.

It might just the balance of power of the current game or it could be the race I am up agianst(sorry can't think of the name right now)

Any one want to shed light on this

Just like real estate, the three keys to winning this game are:

1) Location.
2) Location.
3) Location.

I started a game a couple months ago where I had the Ukra-Tal just two systems away on one side, and the Xi'Chung two systems away on the other side. And only two other colonizable planets in my starting systems. Needless to say, the neighbors got VERY angry when I tried to expand, and the game got nasty very quickly. I was reduced from 3 homeworlds and 8 colonies to 1 homeworld and 2 colonies in just a couple of turns (first time I ever saw the AI press an advantage - the Ukra-Tal actually destroyed three colonies in one turn!).

Anyway, I quit that game & started another, this time exploring like mad and researching combat techs as fast as possible; but this time, I only found one race within the first 50 turns, and they were 8-10 systems away. After another 50 turns, I finally ran into a couple more races, more like 20 systems away from my core systems and 8-10 systems away from my outermost colonies. THAT game was too easy. Fortunately, the new patch has come out, so I've started yet another game...

Yeah the latest patch seems to have increased the aggressiveness of the AI.

in the History file.

Version 1.48:
6. Fixed - Improved the AI's ability to decide whether to attack or not.

The AI is gradually becoming smarter in many ways. I've noticed it in tactical combat. Ships defending a planet would mindlessly rush out and attack you in older Versions. Now they will wait near the planet and work with the WPs or sats standing there. Too bad they can still be lured out once combat begins. I have requested an explicit 'defend planet' and/or 'defend base' strategy to be added that will tell the AI not to let it's ships leave the planet/base for any reason.

This would be a wonderful thing. It is annoying when your missile ships retreat past your planet and the enemy destroys it in passing.

I'd request that this "defend planet" order allow the defendered to sally forth to engage the enemy, so long as it is keeping them at bay. I would hate for a suicide squad with orders not to attack ships to be allowed too close because the defenders cannot move from the planet.

This might be tricky, though, especially with multiple attacking forces.

I think you hit the nail on the head. But I think I am going to stick with this game. It has the makings of and epic battle. I haven't had one since SEIII

Yea, in my single player game. (new start after patch).
Give the AI meduim diff, low bonus. I met the Not so friendly EEE. For the first time ever upon contact, They wiped 2 of my planets out. What a way to say hello.

I then sent in forces, they withdrew. We are not at war. No treaty. I decided to pay them back and moved my forces into the system the retreated to. I had to chose between their retreating ships and a planet. I picked toe planet as a target. Big mistake. The EEE sent their ships back into my system and wiped out my system world. And we still are not at war.

Hehe... speaking of Location, Location, Location I started a Demo game recently with a rather interesting group of systems.

My home system had an AI on one of the planets.... ok. no big deal.

All three of the wormholes in my system were damaging, And Yes... all 3 led to black hole systems. Naturally, all the warp points out of those three black hole systems were damaging wormholes. Yikes.

That was the weirdest start I've ever had.

(Day 8 of the 7 - 10 day shipping from Chips and Bits. Going nuts waiting for SEIV to arrive)

You should've ordered from Strategic Plus instead. Took three days to ship the game to Norway.
