That would be an appropriate way to preserve any ongoing games or campaigns etc., if you have any. Ongoing PBEM games, if
secure, should be finished first of course (or abandoned) before upgrading.
Otherwise - just install the CD version to the default folder, and then apply all the patches. No need to uninstall the old demo version first.
