Default Question about barges...

Well this is bit stupid question but do I have to buy barges and barge transports separately until I can use them? I noticed recently that my barge transports were "empty" (at least they didn't seemed to include barges) as I got my troops into shore of wide river. I admit that I have played river crossings very seldom (maybe I must try them more to gain experience)... Is this made by purpose or some kind of bug?

That's the way it has always worked. You buy barge carriers and barges separately. If you want to match the number of barges with carriers you can or you can buy more barges than carriers then shuttle the carriers back to the barges and while the first barges brought forward are landing troops and shuttling back and forth on their own you can be bringing more barges up as required

Confused a bit here,
Barge carriers come with a barge already loaded on them.
To unload it try driving the carrier into the water & the barge will appear instead.
I have never tried to load a barge back onto its transporter but suspect what would infact happen is the transporter would be loaded on the barge.

The "barge" on a barge carrier is simply a bit set in the carrier data.

On "driving" the carrier into water, a brand new barge unit is spawned, and the bit is then cleared (unlike the original SSI code which allowed multiple spawns, provided the barge carrier survived).

There is no provision for a barge to unspawn back as a bit in the carrier data. So you cannot spawn a barge for one river, load the carrier onto the barge, "load" it again on the far side and then cross a possible second river. Thus river crossings must be of one width of water, only.

(It would be different if the barge carrier had enough carry capacity to pick up the spawned barge that when it was a mere data bit, did not need any load capacity of course.)

Same with rubber rafts - just a bit set on the deploying infantry, not an actual thing to have to carry. "Magically" appears when the infantry try to walk on the water. Causes no problems to the carrying grunts, either. (Have you ever tried to carry a Zodiac?).

Cheers
Andy

Yeah lets chalk that answer up to a serious case of brain fart. As Andy noted, the barge carriers come with a barge built in and after that they need to be withdrawn as they are essentially useless. IDK what I was thinking that morning but it wasn't clearly
