Bad timing on Gold?
I've played around with SEIV for a while, and I have to admit that even though I get a bit frustrated by some of the tedium (diplomacy, freighters), there's something about the game I do like. Might be the fact that it isn't over-engineered eye-candy like everything else.
But- the timing of the Gold Version (which I am interested in because of the improvements in AI, graphics, sound) coincide with MOO3. I like MOO2 quite a bit. It's a tough call that would have been resolved easily if Gold was released now.
Is anyone else having the same concerns?

Re: Bad timing on Gold?
I think the two games will be different enough, so they won't really compete with each other. Those who like the "eye-candy" and goal oriented play will probably go to MOO3, but those who like endless customibility and open-ended role playing games, will stick to SEIV.
Ultimately what I like the most about SEIV is that I can make it into my "own game" and can change the entire feel of the game to whatever I want...a star trek galaxy...star wars...whatever...and since I can't program my own 4X Space Opera game, that's pretty cool.

Re: Bad timing on Gold?
I don't know what to think about SEIV Gold. I love SEIV, but I don't know if I love it enough to pay the shipping and the exchange rate again to have essentially the same game shipped to me here in Canada. Let's face it, there's a lot of extra bells and whistles in the Gold edition, but there's no indication of anything that will force me to completely approach the game in a new way. (e.g. Mongol Invasions expansion for Shogun Total War). So, it definitely isn't a "must buy."
And I had also planned to take a long look at MOO3 as well.
On a different note: the timing of the announcement is also bad -- why would I buy SEIV for Christmas, if I knew a new Version was coming out in two months? Shrapnel Games may have shot themselves in the foot over this...

Re: Bad timing on Gold?
And you are assuming that MOO3 actually does ship in the first quarter of 2002 and doesn't get pushed back again.

Re: Bad timing on Gold?
Just the other day I read the Preview about MOO3 in Computer Gaming World (or was it PC Gamer?). It seems like there's going to be some serious accounting and micromanagement available. As in, population that immigrates/emigrates based on economic, environmental, and social conditions. You want more population on a given planet? Lower the taxes there (for example). Very intricate model. You have a limited number of 'Imperial Focus' points to use each turn to focus on micromanagement, so you are somewhat prevented from handling everything.
All in all, it seems like a very well-thought out game...however, it's starting to look a bit overwhelming on the management side. Even combat will be mostly automatic unless you Focus on it. I'm all about the MOO series, but I dunno about MOO3's worrying about individual regions on a given planet. Lots of depth, but will that much accounting be -fun-?
::edit::
And isn't scheduled for Summer 2002 anyway?

Re: Bad timing on Gold?
I for one, am all ready for SE4 Gold. I live in Canada and I've no problems with paying more money out for this new Version. Without a doubt, SE has been my all time favorite computer game ever since I discovered SE2 way back when. If supporting MM (may they live eternally) by paying another $35 american will insure that this game will continue to improve and expand, and, who knows, go onto SE5(?) I have no problems with this whatsoever. And as for the $15 rebate for sending in the old disk, Thank you Sharpnel for the offer. No other game publisher would ever even concider something like this, but I'm going to hold onto mine. Another $15 to help ensure SE is not going away anytime soon.

Re: Bad timing on Gold?
Actually I wouldn't go that far as SE:IV hasn't been that strong of a seller in the recent month. I don't think we have to worry about a reduction in sales of SE:IV .
So far SE:IV Gold is selling far better.
