when your troops become diseased, should you single them out? do they spread it to other units in that army/squad? i have never figured this out...

They don't spread it unless they have the plague carrier tag.

In an actual battle there is a spell (called Plague) which spreads to adjacent. So then its a good idea(if you are fighting against someone that likes casting it) to separate units and place them in small groups away from eachother.

'w' selects all afflicted units in a squad. You need to select one unit first, so take care that that one isn't or also is afflicted.

I always put diseased troops in the front line...

That way they're first to die...
