Default T54A night vision?

Well I started my campaign as Israel in 1967 against Egypt, Syria and Iraq. My first battle was a meeting engagement against Iraq with visibility of 10.
As I am advancing I begin taking fire from a T54A at range 18. Once I could see them I checked their stats and they have a visibility(?) rating of 20.
I thought that in order to 'see' farther than the visibility you needed a visibility rating of 40 or 50 and that this indicated thermal sights.
Should a T54A in 1967 be able to see farther than the visibility distance in a battle?
Thanks.

The visibility number IS how far they can see (or actual vis if greater).

40+ indicates thermal ie can see through smoke, etc.

In your example stuff with 0 vis can see out to 10 (the visibility), anything with higher than 10 can see their rating in hexes - the T54A can see 20 hexes. Something with 40 rating could see 40 hexes AND through smoke!

So the 40+ thermal vision is only through smoke/obscured hexes?
Through clear terrain a unit can see up to the scenario visibility or its visibility rating, whichever is greater?

The units vision rating is how far they can see at night. So if scenario visibility is 5 and the unit has a vision rating of 20 it can see out to 20. A unit with no night sights could only see to the scenario limit.

40+ vision devices are the game's version of thermal imagers (TI). These can also see through smoke obscuration (Though lots of smoke and fire will have some effect in reducing the distance seen, a change over the original code). TI (or GSR which is treated as TI) therefore costs more than lesser (<40) night fighting gear.

A dark night is typically less than 5 hexes visibility with a moonless night being 1-2.

On vehicles, IR sights are typically 15-20, Image intensifiers or LLTV 30. Infantry night sights are usually much less. All use 40+ for thermal sights since 40 is the "magic range" for thermals.
