Help with lockup
Hi all,
Just got my copy of SE4 Gold from Chips and Bits, installed and ran thru the tutorial (I am a newbie). Unfortunately, the whole thing locks up when I move a ship. My specs are W98SE, a Celeron 333 with 128MB RAM, plenty of HD space, a low end Diamond AGP video card (8 or 16MB memory). Im running SE4 in 1024x768 with 16 bit color. Anyone have any suggestions (besides the usual "for Gods sake upgrade your computer!")???
TIA, George

Re: Help with lockup
Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling SEIV?
If that doesn't help, try running it in 800x600 resolution.
Also, try turning off animated ship movement in the options screen.
As Last resort, open the task manager by hitting "ctrl+alt+del". If you see programs running that you know for a fact that you don't need to run, then close them (end task). If you don't know what a program in the list is, then leave it alone. Never, ever end Explorer, Rundll or Systray. Closing any of those will crash your computer.

Re: Help with lockup
I concur with Fyron, although I'd nuke non-essential background apps first, myself.
Also, your system should be dandy for SE4, I think. Upgrading OS would probably be likely to cause problems rather than solve them, I would think.

Re: Help with lockup
Thanks for the info, folks. Ill try those suggestions. I dont plan to upgrade the OS until I absolutely have to; this one seems to work just fine. I have nothing other than essential stuff in the systray or in the background, so I think Ill go for reinstall first, then switching off the animations, then going to 800x600. Again, thanks a lot :-)
