newbie question on fleet and ship tatics

Hi,
I think that the fleet order suppress the ship orders ... so, how can I make a fleet with some short range ships (with a lot of point defence) that support an huge battleship with long rabg eweabon. I want the little escort ship go close to the enemy, use theye short range weapon and the point def. to stopo missile attack ... meanwhile the battleship must stay far away using his missiles.

there is a way to do that (give different order to different ships in teh same fleet ?). there is a way to control how the computer set the ship in the formations ?
