Re: Moral issue on \"Missle Dance\"

Hehe...well, no I have no 'moral' objections to it, but is its the easiest exploit of the AI I've found to date. Getting into a 'stern chase' with a missile ship is suicide and the AI loves to do it....

Re: Simple, Reasonable Disengage/Retreat Rule

dmm:

A good suggestion, but my opinion is still that the strategic consequences of any halfway possible form of retreat are too grave. I'm sure some people wouldnt abuse the system but there are...

Re: If you think bloodthirsty hurts the AI too much, THINK AGAIN!

Taqwus et al:

IMO, messing with the treaty system like that is a bad idea. That allows the players too much freedom to pick and choose the effects. I personally like having to weigh the good...

Re: Difference between PBEM and TCP/IP

Imperishable:

EXACTLY! I've never understood it when games dont allow for tactical combat between players and state that its because 'No one would want to wait yadda yadda yadda'...NONSENSE!

Re: Computer player bonus

Nyx:

No, I'm quite sure it gets a pretty hefty bonus to it's Research Points. Start a game up with Low Bonus and then take over an AI player about 50 turns in. Note the amount of points they...

Re: Silly Tactical AI Behaviour

Yes, IMO, the AI should NOT use formations. They are good for human players to ease the micromanagement, but they should be abandoned immediately in favor of the individual ship AIs strats.

This...

Re: Questions about torpedoes

I suppose its all a matter of perception. A 'single' beam weapon might actually represent a BATTERY of weapons. Also, picture a beam like in Babylon 5 on the Minbari or Shadow ships that sweeps...

Re: Damage Points To Kill One Population

Yes, that makes planets much more resistant to bombardment and THAT is a good thing. Trouble is that the AI wont adjust for it so it will continue to ineffectually bombard worlds with its...

Re: Shard Cannon too weak???

Yes, I also found the Shard Cannons to be completely lacking and altered them in my set. This is especially true given the fact that in the stock tech set, Armor is fairly uncommon.

Re: Computer player bonus

Yes, Low Bonus definately gives it a huge research boost but it doesnt seem to be consistently doubled. Maybe only the base is doubled and not what they receive in trade? Its tough to tell.

Also,...

Re: Your favorite racial makeup

Re: Forget Missiles(other than early game)

In an attempt to make missiles more useful in later stages of the game I have made several changes to the dynamics. So far, it has worked out OK in our hot-seat games...

1) Increased the cost of...

Yes, I have a tendancy to want to make the game have Naval traits too. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif But SE4 has some fundamental differences from the...

Re: Combat Initiative...

Evan and Coldsteel:

IMO, that would still not work. Dont get me wrong, I'd LIKE to see retreat be an option, but not at the cost of no longer being able to fight decisive battles. And that...

Re: When You have it.......

As SE4 isnt really a 'mass market' game...ie not available in stores...I seriously doubt that 'pushing it out for the holidays' was any real factor. If you followed the development of previous SE...

Re: Combat Initiative...

Crash:

Of course you can simply choose not to exploit holes in the AI. I do it all the time in SE4. It makes for a far better and enjoyable game.

But I think it is something that should be...

Re: How is the AI any better than before??

Sinapus:

Yes, inserting a 'defense ship' with many PD weapons will help, but there is no guarantee it will use those ships to 'escort' the others etc. And they would be a total waste vs a race...

Re: How is the AI any better than before??

Hmm, well while the AI is definately better than before, as you point out, it still has many weak points. Certain settings and game conditions are not going to the give the AI a chance.

I would...

Re: AI is BETTER??

No, the AI does not 'react' to enemy ship designs at all. It has a set of guidelines within which to design its ships and this is preset with no ability to be altered during a...
