Re: Newbies Beware...
No. You don't need to have your God or prophet inside your dominion. You just need to have some dominion influence somewhere on the map.
Your case is unusual as it's not easy to kill the dominion of a player (especially human) unless he's down to a few provinces.

Re: Newbies Beware...
It certainly is mystifying. I wonder if purgatory could have this kind of effect?

Re: Newbies Beware...
Well one thing for certain your pretender and prophet being killed outside your domain did not cause you to lose the game. I've had opponents still alive for several turns where they only controlled one province with zero commanders, prophets and pretenders.
Maybe the game had some type of victory conditions ?!??

Re: Newbies Beware...
Im in one where I have no castle, no prophet, no pretender, and Im still in. I think it has to do with the ability to pray the return of your pretender though Im not sure all the criteria.
Having a priest might keep you goind then your pretender dies. Having some dominion seems to be a factor.
A temple in a province that can create priests? Maybe
A troop that can become a prophet and build a temple in a province that could then create priests? It doesnt seem to think that deep.

Re: Newbies Beware...
Yes, but my pretender and prophet were alive and kicking two provinces away from my dominion . I did notice purgatory had been cast at some point but i am not sure. My god was alive but they're were no priests in my domain(s)...maybe that was it? There is so much to this game it's incredible I was Undead against Marignon BTW,but i was NOT killed...just out of my domain Thanks for all your help guys...Merry Christmas!

Re: Newbies Beware...
There are only 2 possiblities. First, you had "Dominion Strength" as the victory condition. Second - and more likely - there was a game bug, and you should post it in the bugs thread and send your Last trn file to Illwinter.
You do not lose from dominion unless you have zero dominion on the entire map - no white candles anywhere - which was not the case.
Priests and temples are not important. You can always appoint a prophet, summon a holy/unholy unit, seduce one, mind-control one, get one randomly by luck, discover a site which gives a temple, get a temple by luck, or whatever... there is never an insurmountable barrier to getting holy units again after losing all of them, mainly because you can always have a prophet... though there is a several-turn wait after the old one dies.
