You can't really rely on a large expensive unit with a MR of 5 much past the very early game.

They have MR 11 in 2.08. I guess Machaka got a boost to compensate for the loss of the 80 gold researcher after all.

Are the spiders really upkeep free once they lose the rider?

I hope not, though that would be amusingly consistent.

Yes, they are upkeep free. Only the rider costs money, the spider still sits around regenerating like a motha, since they have 50+ hp I believe.
